What is Sports Conditioning?

Sports conditioning is a year round commitment for athletes that includes pre-season, in-season, post-season, and off-season. For athletes to maintain their peak level of fitness, these four time periods have a different program, geared towards achieving certain goals.

Once the athlete is in their best shape they can start doing advanced exercises to help improve performance in their specific sport. Sports conditioning helps an athlete become more flexible, stronger, and ready to engage in competitions.

Sports conditioning is a holistic adventure and incorporates different elements such as strength, power, agility, endurance, flexibility, dexterity, and coordination. A good sports conditioning program should include exercises that work on each of the aforementioned areas.

The main components of sports conditioning include:

Strength
Strength entails the maximum force that a group of muscles generates against a given resistance. Strength from the upper and lower body should give maximum endurance for the best possible results.
Endurance
Endurance measures an individual’s ability to keep going when the body is performing intense physical activities. It also means a person’s capacity to endure short bursts of intense activity over a given period. Muscular endurance means muscles can exert repeated force and are able to sustain it.
Speed
Speed entails the ability to move quickly over a short distance or the ability to coordinate fast movement of individual joints. For many sports, speed is crucial for enhancing performance.

Sports Conditioning Methods

Sprinting
Short and explosive sprinting helps boost an athlete’s speed. This is a very important trait in sports like football, soccer, and rugby.
Compound Movements
This method entails training the body at explosive speeds while using accommodating resistance chains and bands. This combination helps you control acceleration and deceleration while moving heavy loads. If these movements are implemented in the right way, they will help boost strength in a short period.
Medicine Balls

Push/Pull/Carry

Plyometric
